About Me
Hello, my name is Devon Kardell. I was born on Nantucket island, Massachusetts, into a musical family. I grew up performing in recitals and talent shows, eventually forming bands and playing concerts while writing and recording my own music. After studying composition at Jacksonville University, I began teaching in 2007 for schools in the DC area and providing in-home piano and guitar lessons to both children and adults. Long story short, I love playing music and it has always been a valued part of my life.
My teaching style is informed by my own experience as a musician and student; the joy and pride in playing and performing and having fun and expressing yourself, mixed with consistent meaningful practice and learning how to speak the language of music. I tailor my approach depending on the student, trying to find the right balance between a positive, motivating experience while still picking up the fundamental knowledge needed to become a skilled musician. I work with a student on what they want to learn, be it a classical piece or the newest pop tune. I also incorporate composition, lyric-writing, improvisation, recording, and arranging, and all kinds of musical games and apps.
